Notes of Wisdom

Just the other day I found the Geek Code, while surfing Eric S. Raymond’s website. Pretty late, I admit, since the Code has been there from the Beginning of Internet. Well, at that time I was not yet there, so to say. I’m not really sure if I’m a geek myself, but I liked it, kind of.

Another thing was the Weapons Extension line Eric has added to his code. If that’s just a DOOM! game thingie, so what? But it looked so seriously American to me in a way I really don’t like. If you think you cannot have freedom without weapons to protect it, you’ve missed the point. To quote Benjamin Franklin (yes, that one): “They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” To me that means that freedom does not rely on external factors, but on something stronger than that. Weapons are about relative safety, nothing more, and the price of that is that you must be prepared to seriously harm or kill others. Well, I’m not. And, you guessed, I think games like DOOM! are a waste of time.

So, in response I wrote my own Weapons Inversion. Don’t take it too seriously. There might be some irony in it...

To be clear: this is free software, free as in ‘free speech’ and free as in ‘free beer’. Use it at your own discretion and share it appropriately with anyone you like. Though, if you want to work on it in any way, I’d appreciate to hear about that.

Cheers!

How To Use

The use of the Geek Code Weapons Inversion is simple: just add the line of determinators at the end of your Geek Code block and tell the people where to find the description (that’s on this web page). To decode the Geek Code itself there is this nifty webtool.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Contents Overview

Here’s an example of the Geek Code Weapons Inversion. Click a determinator for further explanation.

     Wma+++A>Wma Wim--<Wim+++* Win++_ Wgp++$! v0.1

The code is simple, as code should be. There are two categories, plus some optional modifiers. All determinators should be written on one line, separated by spaces, while modifiers can be added to the determinator it refers to. To avoid confusion about the correct interpretation of the code add the version number at the end of the line. Just in case there would occur future developments of the Weapons Inversion. Code is case sensitive, of course.
