That's us First published 11/04/2008
Updated 10/10/2009 meSelf comes in two flavours: Martin and Nelleke, who have teamed up happily for three decades now. They are virtually the same age, born & bred in different parts of The Netherlands and since 2004 they live and work in Scotland, until recently on behalf of The Iona Community. meSelf Martin is a curious guy, who likes to know how things work. He gets frustrated when he does not get the clue. That is why he loves to read and learn, and also why he usually unscrews a computer before installing it. History has his special interest. He has worked in education, health care and church and, as a second career, studied theology in Kampen and Amsterdam. In his spare time he has also engaged in bicycle repair, the peace movement, environmental campaigning and cyclists' union, local politics, steam locomotive restoration, computer system administration, archery, cycling, hiking and lightweight camping. After a decade of being a parish minister with the Protestant Church in the Netherlands, he is now working for the Church of Scotland. Since 24 January he is a parish minister in West Kintyre. Although Martin is not completely sure if he is a geek, he is happy to give his personal Geek Code. If you are not geeky enough to interpret it just like that, here is where you can find the explanation -- except for the last line, which is coded according to my own Geek Code Weapons Inversion. Remember: this is just for fun... -----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK----- Version: 3.1 GO/H d-? s++ a++ C++ UL++ P L+++ !E W++ !N o? K- w !O M? V? Nelleke
is a self-conscious woman, who likes to do things
peacefully and profoundly. She tends to be humble about her qualities,
but she has worked with public transport and in health care. She too was
engaged in environmental campaigning, local politics
and church
activities. In order to extend her commitment she completed a
lay
course in theology. As a Fairtrade
volunteer and as a professional she has a lot of experience in running
and computerising
a shop. In her spare time she likes a bit of reading,
cycling, hiking
and camping
- or just a simple computer game. She quickly got the hang of her new job and loved to do it, but moving to Kintyre again means a new start. Back to top |

And then there were
five... Our three children live their own lives
now, Maarten and Arnold in the same town, but
Ellen and
her husband Maarten
have moved far north (be it still more south than Glasgow). They work
with Cobelfret (logistics), Tideway (2nd officer), Vodisys (software & sysadmin) and Ziggo (customer services). Ellen's Maarten and a friend of his have also started their own webhosting business, Sonad (please do not ask us for the meaning of the name). That's all we want to
tell. We are very proud and fond of each and all of them, but they
should speak for
themselves. Back to top |

Bert First
published 06/05/2008
On 9 December 2007, very early in the morning, Bert died. He was Martin's oldest brother, only just 48 years. Almost half a year later we begin to accept it, kind of. Bert deserves his own page on our website. Back to top |

The Wedding First published 28/06/2008
Life goes on... On 13 June 2008 -- yes, it was a Friday, but why bother? -- Ellen and her Maarten got married. It was a wonderful day and we are most happy with all of it. Click here to view a few pictures. Back to top |
